United Way of Yavapai County (UWYC) Verde Valley/Sedona Area

The United Way of Yavapai County (UWYC) manages a branch office in the VerdeValley/Sedona area via the affiliation of long-time Verde Valley resident Deborah Darby.

Deborah has been involved with several non-profit organizations in the area since she came here more than 18 years ago including volunteer positions with the Women for Women Learning Center and the Cottonwood Chamber of Commerce.

Deborah has also helped with fundraising and educational efforts for Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Compassion & Choices of Arizona.

“My job is getting the word out about the good things that United Way does for our communities and how you can  help.”

Working with community members, UWYC has held two Community Conversations in the Verde Valley/Sedona.  Another, the Economic Preparedness Planning Forum, was held on April 7, 2009, in Clarkdale.

Local “Senior Companion” receives Governor's Volunteer Service Award

Senior Companions are healthy older adults who choose to become dedicated, trained volunteers. They help the aged or frail maintain their independence and stay in their own homes. Without the help of Senior Companions, many older adults would not be able to continue living at home and might need more expensive, less personal care.

Senior Companion Director for the Verde Valley, Shana Smith says, “We are so pleased that this year local Senior Companion Patrick Horrell received the Governor’s Award on Service and Volunteerism.” The Senior Companion Program is partially funded in the Verde Valley by United Way of Yavapai County.

Given annually, the Governor's Volunteer Service Awards honor outstanding youth, adults, businesses, government agencies, non-profit/faith-based national service members and service-learning practitioners who exemplify the motto "Give Today, Touch Tomorrow”.

“From the start Patrick has been exceptional, giving his all and going out of his way for his clients”, says Smith.  Horrell has served in the Cottonwood area since May 2008 and currently has seven clients that he sees on a regular basis.

In 2002, the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism established the Governor's Volunteer Service Awards to recognize and thank Arizonians throughout the state who have given their time and talents to help solve serious social problems.

“Patrick is a veteran and is able to relate well in interactions with many of our male clients because a large majority have also served our country” says Smith. According to Smith, Horrell is committed to being creative in helping all of his clients. He is also active in community events, community businesses and organizations that are committed to serving the adult and aging population.

“It would be surprising to find Patrick at an ice cream shop, grocery store, area senior center or community event without a senior at his side; one who could not have, or would not have been able to be there without him.”

Senior Company volunteers give 20 hours/week and may be eligible to receive a small tax-free stipend plus meal and mileage reimbursement. They also qualify for an annual physical exam, secondary insurance and formal recognition for the important work they do in our communities.

For more information on how you can become a Senior Companion or find one to help you or a loved one, please contact Shana Smith at (928) 202-8261.
