Who We Help
United Way Community Impact
Over the past several years, the Community Impact Committee of United Way of Yavapai County (UWYC) has evaluated options to develop areas of need where we could invest our resources in order to achieve significant change. We reviewed a needs assessment and considered many models adopted by Arizona United Ways and United Ways from all over the country, and we conducted town hall-like sessions called "Community Conversations" to solicit comments regarding preceived needs.
We determined that there were three areas to focus on in Yavapai County: Critical Needs, Successful Lives, and Commitment to Learning. In order to qualify for funding, programs and services must support one of these three areas. The UWYC Community Impact areas are defind and expanded on with some examples as follows:
1. Critical Needs: Investing in basic food, shelter, safety, medical, and emergencey needs.
We want to assist the citizens of Yavapai County in meeting their needs. Programs that help achieve this goal include emergency food banks, emergency housing, emergency clothing and supplies emergency medical aid, etc.
2. Successful Lives: Strengthening individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency.
We want to assist the citizens of Yavapai County in overcoming obstacles to achieve a level of self-sufficiency that will enable them to live in our community. Programs that help achieve this goal include: substance abuse prevention and treatment, child abuse prevention, preventive mental health care, shelter for the homeless, lack of employment skills, poverty reduction programs, budget training and counseling, parent education, teenage pregrnancy prevention, English language learning, etc.
3. Commitment to Learning: Empowering people of all ages through quality learning and skills development.
We want to create and sustain lifelong learning environment in Yavapai County, ranging from the best practices for preparing children for school, reducing school dropouts, preparation of students for higher education and employment, training seniors to be volunteer resource persons, improving citizens' ability to care for the natural enviornment., etc.
